A sealed selector detent

Wednesday 13th September

The storm persisted until bedtime and just before that, a tree branch fell down from upon high and scared the bejesus out of us, until we realised that it hadn’t fallen on us.

We heard that nearby had experienced large hailstones, thankfully not us.

Rain:

Lightning:

In the morning we once again went to the garage and there was no sign of the leak. It felt promising but was only a short drive. I sprayed more ‘tyre talc’ on the suspect area and we paid the informal fee for the use of garage space and the advice and head scratching and said our goodbyes.

I will remember Marius, Peter’s son, for a gem of a reply, having asked him yesterday when he was going for lunch. He said, “This is a family business and Mother cooks and then she calls us”. So traditional and convenient.

We completed a seven hour, 370 mile leg with just two food and drink stops plus a couple more early-on where I checked for oil. There was none and so I can say that it is fixed. It’s still amazing to think that with the air movement under the Landy, the leak point was sort of self cleaning, totally skewing the search which had started in June in the alps!

We are still driving with the central cubby removed, so that it is easy to look down onto the overdrive. That will be sealed back up in the morning, weather permitting. In fact all activity is weather permitting as we seem to have dragged a rain front here and it doesn’t want to stop. This might delay our alpine drive across to Kranjska Gora and on through the Julien Alps.

So now we are poised on the upslope of the Austrian alps, wondering when the rain will stop as we don’t want to miss the views. We are at Bad Feilnbach at the Kaiser Camping Outdoor Resort (click here for website). There appears not to be a discount for arriving and staying in the pouring rain and not using any of the facilities. So there you are, €31.20. “Bitte Schön”.

Maybe tomorrow will be a short day, followed on Friday by the most scenic drive, up the Grossglockner Hochalpenstrasse, from Zell am See to Lienz and on to Kranjska Gora, the opposite direction to that which we took in 2015.
